SPECIAL REPORT 2026
How Trump's Second Term Ended the 75-Year NATO-American Alliance
From Greenland tariffs to humiliating Macron, Merz, Meloni & Sánchez — the inside story of America's historic soft power decline.
Quick Navigation:
1. Paper Tiger Doctrine | 2. Greenland Tariffs | 3. Allies Humiliated | 4. H1B India War | 5. Soft Power Collapse
Everything was working fine. Then Donald Trump returned in January 2025 and treated America's closest allies like debtors. In 18 months, the US pulled 5,000 troops from Germany, raised EU auto tariffs to 25%, and branded NATO a “paper tiger.”
1. The “Paper Tiger” Doctrine: Trump NATO End Begins
“Without the U.S.A., NATO IS A PAPER TIGER! COWARDS, and we will REMEMBER!”
— Donald Trump, Truth Social, April 2026
Trump told Britain's Daily Telegraph that leaving NATO was "beyond reconsideration." When Reuters asked if he'd quit the alliance, he replied: "Wouldn't you, if you were me?" The Pentagon began planning punishments for members who refused to back the Iran war.
2. Greenland Tariffs: Trump Tariffs Europe Into Retaliation
The economic war started with Greenland. In February 2025, Trump announced 10% tariffs on eight European nations — Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Britain — until America could "buy Greenland."
French President Emmanuel Macron called it "unacceptable imperial blackmail" and led an emergency EU summit. The result: the first-ever EU-wide retaliation package worth €93 billion, reported by Reuters.
By May 2026, Trump escalated: 25% tariffs on all EU cars and trucks, claiming the bloc violated its trade deal. German exports crashed 15%.
3. US Allies Humiliated: Macron, Merz, Meloni & Sánchez Targeted
Trump's diplomacy wasn't negotiation. It was public humiliation.
France – Macron
After Macron refused to join Trump's "Board of Peace," Trump threatened 200% tariffs on French wine and posted: "nobody wants him because he will be out of office very soon."
Germany – Merz
Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the US was "humiliated" by Iran. Trump responded by pulling the 5,000 troops and posting: "He doesn't know what he's talking about!" The Sun reported this as the trigger for the troop withdrawal.
Spain & Italy
"Italy has not been of any help to us and Spain has been horrible," Trump said. He then floated suspending Spain from NATO for refusing the 5% GDP defense target, per Reuters.
Polish PM Donald Tusk called it a "disastrous trend" and warned the greatest threat to NATO was "the ongoing disintegration of our alliance."
4. H1B Visa India: Trump Declares Economic War on New Delhi
In September 2025, Trump raised the H-1B visa fee to $100,000 per year — a direct strike at India's $283 billion IT sector.
India's foreign ministry warned it would "disrupt families". Indians receive 71% of all H-1Bs. But US tech firms didn't hire Americans. They simply accelerated offshoring to Bangalore and Hyderabad, as Reuters Tech documented.
5. US Soft Power Decline 2026: By the Numbers
- Brand Finance Global Soft Power Index 2026: US suffered the steepest decline of all 193 nation brands. China overtook America in global reputation.
- Pew Research June 2025: US favorability crashed in 15 allied nations. Only 19% of French and 22% of Germans view the US positively.
- Press Freedom: US fell to 57th worldwide — behind Ukraine and Ghana, per Reporters Without Borders.
Conclusion: A King, Not an Ally
Donald Trump didn't reform NATO. He executed it publicly. With Greenland tariffs, 25% EU duties, troop withdrawals, and insults of Macron, Merz, Meloni, Sánchez, and India, the 75-year alliance ended not with a treaty but with a livestream.
